We are very excited to announce that Changes for Stammerers are working with children’s authors:

Helen Rutter & Kelly May 

to help raise Stammering Awareness in schools.

We wanted to start with books aimed at Primary school ages.

Both Infant and Juniors.

After discovering Kelly’s beautiful book “Sydney's Special Voice" , we felt it was the perfect book to help introduce young children to stammering awareness in a natural, positive, and uplifting way. We fell in love with Sydney the speech bubble and his special voice. If reading this book helps one young person to see their stammer or their friends stammer as something special rather than something embarrassing that would make us all at Changes very happy.  We love the book Kelly May !!

Then when looking for a book aimed at older children - junior age - I remember feeling very self-aware at this age and alone, as  I didn't know anybody else who stammered.  So I was really looking for a book that would help somebody in that age group feel they are not alone in this.  I also wanted something that really tells what it's like to stammer at school, to help and encourage empathy with those who don't stammer.  My daughters are both teachers and this book came highly recommended from them and their fellow teachers.  From the very first page this book got me, and I knew this was the book we wanted to get into as many schools as possible.  It's an amazing book - it's honest,  it's funny, it's emotional, it resonated with me so much and I left primary school - well lets just say a good few years ago.  The book made me laugh, it's made me hold my breath and just want to keep turning the page.  We know this book will shine a light on awareness and make a difference to everybody reading it. We just love the book and Billy - Thank you Helen Rutter.

Changes for Stammerers is purchasing signed copies of both of these books and donating them to schools to help encourage kindness, understanding, acceptance and empathy from an early age.

This mission would not be possible without the wonderful books created by Helen Rutter and Kelly May. Their stories help shine a light on stammering in such a positive, honest, and uplifting way, helping children feel understood, included, and less alone.

At Changes for Stammerers, we run courses for adults who stammer, teaching techniques to help people gain more control and confidence in their speech. Many of us carry memories from our own school days, so this project is especially close to our hearts 💛
